The Electronic Security Systems Scheme from SSAIB covers the following product areas:

  • Intruder Alarms (both commercial and domestic)
  • Video Surveillance Systems (VSS)
  • VSS Systems (remotely monitored and detector activated)
  • Access Control Systems
  • Scaffold Alarm Systems
  • Vacant Property Alarm Systems
  • Lone Worker Devices

Certification is a must for any company operating in any of the areas listed above.
Whether you are new to the sector or a more seasoned practitioner, certification by SSAIB will help to demonstrate that you operate to professional standards and that you are technically competent.

If you install monitored systems, certification will also demonstrate compliance with NPCC and Police Scotland policies on Police response to security system activations.  This will enable you to obtain unique reference numbers (URNs) and therefore a Police response to system activation.

Intruder Alarm

Installers generally take responsibility for the design specification, installation and/or maintenance of the intruder alarm system. The certification process looks at all relevant aspects of your business process to ensure that it complies with standards and codes of practice. This assessment also includes a review of site installations.

The assessment aims to ensure that you have the appropriate knowledge and skill to undertake the relevant range of services you offer. It also helps to establish the financial stability and operational adequacy of the business setup. This will encompass checking some or all of the items listed in the checklist overleaf.

Video Surveillance Systems (VSS)

This scheme is appropriate for companies who design, install, commission or maintain Video surveillance systems (VSS).
Certification against the requirements of this scheme ensures that you provide these services in compliance with appropriate standards and codes of conduct. VSS must be designed appropriate to the nature of the risk identified; they must be compliant with relevant legislation (including The Human Rights Act and Data Protection requirements as appropriate) and satisfy the agreed operational requirements.

Access Control Systems

This scheme is appropriate for companies providing electronic installations designed to permit or deny access to supervised premises. Control may be by means of cards, tokens, codes or biometrics.
The company must have appropriate expertise in the design, provision, installation and/or maintenance of access control systems.
System designs must be appropriate to the nature of the risk identified; compliant with relevant legislation (including The Human Rights Act, the Data Protection Act and Disability Discrimination Act as appropriate) and satisfy the agreed operational requirements. This will encompass checking some or all of the items listed in the adjacent checklist.

Lone Worker Devices

Under current legislation, all employers have a responsibility to consider the safety and welfare of employees who may be working alone or responding to an activated alarm as key holders. Lone workers and key holders are a vital part of many fire and security strategies.
Increasingly, employers are issuing their lone workers with portable devices which can monitor and be used to summon assistance if needed.

SSAIB offers certification to providers of such services and associated monitoring centres in accordance with BS 8484, the code of practice for the provision of Lone Worker Device Services.

Scaffold Alarm Systems

This scheme is suitable for organisations that design, install, maintain and repair alarm systems intended to detect unauthorised access to scaffolding. It is based on the requirements of an SSAIB Code of Practice SS 2006. This code of practice incudes two grades of system, Standard and Enhanced. Standard grade systems are not required to include means of signalling alarm conditions to a remote centre. Enhanced grade systems are required to signal alarm condition to an ARC complying with BS EN 50518.

Vacant Property Alarm Systems

This scheme is suitable for organisations that supply alarm system intended to protect empty (void) property from thieves and vandals. In the absence of a suitable British or European standard the scheme is based on compliance with an SSAIB Code of Practice SS 2005.  The code is essentially in two parts one part including requirements for equipment the other including recommendations for the design, installation and maintenance and repair of temporary alarm systems.
