SSAIB Training Manager Trevor Jenks to Attend Wandsworth Apprenticeship Breakfast

SSAIB Training Manager Trevor Jenks to Attend Wandsworth Apprenticeship Breakfast

SSAIB training manager Trevor Jenks will be attending the Wandsworth Enterprise Week Apprenticeship Breakfast on Wednesday March 7.

The open event – which has been devised by both Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce and Wandsworth Council – is taking place at Banham Group HQ in London during National Apprenticeship Week. It will focus on the value of apprenticeships and how businesses can be boosted by investing in apprentices.

With heads of relevant training providers discussing the structure of apprenticeships – as well as the current funding available to business – the Apprenticeship Breakfast will no doubt be beneficial to any SSAIB-registered firm looking for guidance and support regarding apprenticeships, with a dedicated Q&A session also being part of proceedings.

For more information, click here to consult the Apprenticeship Breakfast e-invite. Meanwhile, to reserve your place at the event, please email Kevin Faulkner of Banham Group at

SSAIB and FIA Join Forces to Help Security Firms Gain Fire Certification

SSAIB and FIA Join Forces to Help Security Firms Gain Fire Certification

SSAIB have partnered up with the Fire Industry Association (FIA) to help our interested security registered firms gain fire detection and alarms certification as well.

The innovative project is available for the next six months and has been set up to aid more of our firms that want to become third-party certified for the BAFE SP-203 scheme and support a growth in delivering best practice in the fire industry.

Those firms that decide to apply will be granted a 12-month probationary membership with the FIA, which will allow them to have access to the FIA’s comprehensive, high quality training. This will, in turn, help them to prepare for their SSAIB audit – as it will ensure that they know what is required of them to meet the requirements of the scheme and that they are also working to the industry standard.

This initiative provides a host of benefits for those firms looking to branch out into fire detection and alarms, which SSAIB chief executive Alex Carmichael hopes will benefit our registered firms.

Alex revealed: “This is a great opportunity for firms looking to branch out into fire detection and alarms certification and I hope that anyone interested goes ahead and applies for the initiative – as the wealth of knowledge that the FIA can pass on will definitely help towards understanding what is needed to meet the standards and gain certification.

“We look forward to working closely with the FIA over the coming months and I’d like to thank them for partnering up with us and offering to help our firms increase their scope of certification.”

Boasting over 700 members, the FIA pride themselves on shaping standards and influencing legislation and offer unrivalled technical publications – as well as being the prime technical resource for the fire industry. FIA membership manager Chris Tilley was also quick to point out the benefits of the partnership, which has been born out of a “long-standing friendship."

Chris said: “The FIA and SSAIB have a long-standing friendship and - as a result - we have been looking for ways in which we can work together to improve the services currently offered to SSAIB security customers who are also engaged with fire detection and alarms, but are not yet third-party certified; with the overall aim of raising the game across the industry.

“The FIA are willing to help with this by offering 12 months probationary membership for any company who signs up with SSAIB on the BAFE SP203-1 scheme. For anyone who would like further guidance on this, we can also offer the consultancy services of our compliance manager Kevin Stearns through our ‘Route to Certification’ scheme.

“We hope SSAIB-registered firms will take this opportunity to be part of something bigger - as we all strive to raise the standards and professionalism of the fire industry.”

SSAIB Inspector Calls it a Day After 20 Years of Service

SSAIB Inspector Calls it a Day After 20 Years of Service

SSAIB inspector David Balcombe has retired after a 20-year stint working for the company.

The Horsham-based 80-year-old joined the SSAIB’s team of auditors back in 1997 and has mainly covered the Surrey and Sussex areas for the last two decades, but he made the decision to retire last year.

David’s last commitment for the SSAIB was attending the recent auditors’ meeting earlier this week, where a presentation was made to him to recognise his efforts and commemorate his long-standing association with SSAIB.

Chief executive Alex Carmichael commented: “On behalf of everyone at SSAIB, I’d like to thank David for all of his hard work over the last 20 years and the endless amount of audits he’s completed in that time. I’m sure I also speak for everyone within the company when I wish him an enjoyable retirement and all the best for the future.”
